QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • I am curious how long this pot will hold its temperature. I have been using a converted ice chest but want to move from 5 gallon to 10 gallon batches and the ice chest won't handle that much grain (I suspect).

Great question!  You're definitely right, this 16 gallon mash tun will hold upwards of 38 pounds of grain.  How well it holds it's temp depends in part how you heat it and in part how much grain is in there.  If you heat your mash water directly in this mash tun, and have anywhere from 12 - 20 lbs of grain, expect about 2-4 degrees of temperature loss over the course of an hour.  If you heat your mash water directly, and have 21 - 38+ lbs of grain, expect a little less, more like 1 - 2 degrees over the course of the mash.  The more grain, the better the thermal mass holds and the less temperature fluctuation you'll have.  Once you get used to a stainless steel mash tun, you'll never turn back!
