Small Batch Mead is HUGE right now, and it’s soooooo much fun!  What I like about the ability to do small batches is that you can try tons of different mead styles, experiment with all kinds of different fruits, flavors and honey, and still not break the bank to do it!  Of course, to do it properly, you’ll probably want to make a batch once or twice a month - you don’t want to run out!

Our Small Batch Mead Equipment Kit comes with everything you need to make a solid go of meadmaking.  Basically, all of the little stuff that you don’t really think of when you’re getting into it.  How will I transfer it?  How do I yield a full gallon?  What is that doohickey that fills the bottles again?  We try to make it super easy and straightforward, including awesome Recipes Kits, a Step By Step Instructional Video 3 Part Series, Step by Step Instructional Downloads,  and even a Fermentation Nutrient Kit with step by step instructions, so that if you can make yourself a nice bowl of cereal, you can probably make some pretty kick-ass mead, too!

Ask a Question
  • Would all I have to buy is a 6.5 gallon bucket and a 5 gallon carboy to upgrade from 1 gallon batches to 5?

Exactly!  The recipes will scale up in a linear fashion, so all you'll need to upgrade is the size of your equipment and use more honey.

  • Do I need to purchase any additional additives other than and honey and yeast in order to make basic mead from The Mead Premium 1 Gallon Starter Kit? If so, what else would I need and how much?

This Starter Kit has all of the equipment and additives that you need to make your mead.  All you'll need is a Mead Recipe Kit (Honey and Yeast) and your chosen bottles for bottling after fermentation.  We like the Clear Flip Top Bottles - 16 oz, but you can use any wine or beer bottle to bottle your mead when it's done.  You'll need approximately twenty 6 oz bottles, ten 12 oz bottles or 375 mL split wine bottles, eight 16 oz bottles, six 22 oz bottles, five 750 mL (standard wine bottles) or four 1 L bottles, depending on which size bottle you choose

  • since you get Fermaid K & DAP. Do you still need to buy Campden tablets, Potassium Sorbate & Potassium Metabisulfite?. And can you use US-05 YEAST or Wyeast 1056 or is there a good yeast to you that is not a wine yeast?.

You don't need potassium sorbate unless you want some extra stabilization in your mead.  Sorbate will stopany fermentation after the initial racking off of the yeast, and also help stabilize acids.  Campden tablets are potassium metabisulfite, so you can use those if you need to kill the yeast culture for back sweetening.  US-05 or Wyeast 1056 will work great for most meads, but we have found that wine strains tend to produce better meads because of the profiles and tendency towards simple sugars.  Either way, you definitely need the yeast nutrients to help finish fermentation in a mead.  We've been playing with Imperial Loki and WLP518 as alternatives to wine strains due to their versatility, so I'd start with kveik strains if you want to experiment with non-wine yeast strains in your meads.

  • Do you have complete kits and recipes books

Yes, we offer this Complete Kit, several 1 Gallon Mead Recipe Kits, as well as resources on our BrewCranium Blog and BrewChatterTV, our YouTube Channel.  We also offer one of the best meadmaking books available, The Compleat Meadmaker by Ken Schramm.

  • Can I buy a plastic fermenting tub with the lid drilled for bubbler

Absolutey!  Simply add the bucket and lid to your cart, along with the grommet and airlock, and type 'Drill Lid for Grommet' in the order comments, and we're happy to drill the lid for you.
