Our extract version of Janet's Brown Ale is the famous recipe, slightly modified to account for extracts, courtesy of Mike 'Tasty' Mcdole, fellow avid homebrewer, craft beer supporter and all around amazing guy! In honor of his memory, Janet's Brown Ale is one of the official recipes for the American Homebrewers Association ( AHA ) Big Brew Day 2021! He brewed this beer in honor of his late wife, Janet, and won the American Brown Ale category in 2004 with this bigger, hoppier version of the style.

For Big Brew 2021, we saw that Janet’s Brown Ale was one of the headlining recipes and got excited! This is a beer that we’ve brewed several times, partly because it kept winning over Mac’s Brown Ale at competitions and we wanted to see why!
This big, hoppy brown ale was taken (with permission!) from Jamil Zainasheff’s Brewing Classic Styles (page 143), which was the recipe given to Jamil by his friend Mike ‘Tasty’ Mcdole after he won the Brown Ale category in the 2004 NHC with it. We were excited to brew this recipe with Jamil for Big Brew 2021 and hear cool stories about what a stand up guy Mike Mcdole really was!
