Citra® T-90 Hop Pellets - 1 lb
Description
US Citra® T90 Hop Pellets, 1 Pound sealed bulk package
Citra® Hops boast parentage from Hallertau Mittelfruh, Tettnang, Brewers Gold, and East Kent Golding. It was developed by Yakima's Hop Breeding Company and officially released in 2007 after 12+ years of development. Citra® continues to be one of the most sought after hops in both the homebrewing communities and craft brewing communities because of it's wonderfully unique flavor characteristics.
Usage
While Citra® can be used for bittering, it tends to lean more towards a harsh and onion-y or garlicky flavor profile. With as sought after as it is, and considering the overall flavor profile of late additions, it almost seems a waste to use it aggressively for bittering. It's best used for late additions (5 minutes or less left in the boil), flameout/whirlpool additions, and as a dry hop.
Aroma and Flavor
The wide range of delicate fruity flavors and aromas that Citra® produces are nothing short of incredible. First and foremost, the biggest flavor is always going to be a giant burst of citrus, primarily grapefruit with lime and bright orange. It's not uncommon to pull lychee, gooseberry and mango as well, and these more subtle flavors, as well as the headlining citrus characteristics, can be amplified depending on the hops you add with Citra®.

One of the first recognized ‘New Wave’ hops, they landed on a gold mine with Citra! It literally pairs well with almost everything, and even though it’s primarily used as a late addition hop because the flavor is so citrus forward and amazing, it really does amazing as a bittering hop. The co-humulones are super low, giving you a smooth and clean bittering profile. If you haven’t tried it, check out our Citra Pale Ale and you’ll see. The late addition profile is typically citrusy, but definitely very bright. I really like to pair Citra with something like Azacca, Simcoe or Mosaic to add some dank, piney backbone to help push the bright side of the profile.

Possible Substitutes for Citra
While there is no real substitution for Citra®, the closest hops we've found are Australian Galaxy, and to a lesser degree, Vic Secret. Both have the expected huge citrus fruit character of Citra®, although Galaxy is fruitier and a little less complex.
Simcoe®, Citra®, and Mosaic® are registered trademarks owned by Yakima Chief Hops, LLC.
